Stunning Lightning Snakes Serving Platter
Coast Salish artist Joe Becker of the Musquem has been carving for more than 25 of his 59 years. In the mid-1980s, Becker headed up the Coast Salish House project at the Museum of Man in Ottawa. More recently Joe was commissioned by the Museum of Anthropology to create a 12 foot diameter Salmon sculpture for the entrance to the new building expansion due to be completed in 2008. As well, he was chosen to create the logo for the new Thunderbird Olympic ice rink at the University of British Columbia. The four foot yellow cedar design will hang from the entrance of the arena when it is completed in time for the 2010 Olympics. He now works full-time as a carver on the Musqueam Reserve. "It's great to create our traditional art, it something that I love to do," he said. "This is a way of giving something back."
