Kwakiutl Shaman with skull amulet
In full evidence is Sammy's ability to capture the essence, the mythic qualities of the village shaman in full trance. As well, we can see the strong influence of his mentor, master carver Simon Dick.
Prominent Kwakiutl artist Sammy Dawson grew as a young artist watching his legendary grandfather William Robertson carving masks, bentwood boxes and talking sticks for potlatches in Alert Bay. This early immersion has been the springboard to Sammy's own stellar artisic career, with his artwork being highly sought after by both galleries and private collectors. Sammy has been working directly with master carver Simon Dick since 2001 on major commissions, which has greatly influenced the progression of his unique artform.
